Elements of an Excellent Fictional Narrative (Short Story)
1. Include the parts of PLOTàepxosition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution 2. Use a narrative lead. 3 Types of Narrative Leads Reaction/Reflection: you or a character reacting or thinking Action: you or a character doing something Dialogue: you or a character or characters speaking 3. Include 5 Ws--who, what, where, when, why 4. Describe people and setting 5. Describe moment to moment action using details and zoom in 6. Use TIPS to create paragraphs-change in Time, Idea, Person or Place, and Speaker. 7. Include dialogue or conversation. Use speech tags. 8. Include thoughts and feelings and characters 9. Include the theme: what a character learned about yourself, other people, or life 10. Use an effective ending. Same as #2 narrative lead: (reaction/reflection, action, or dialogue) 11. Use figurative language (simile, metaphor, or personification) 12. Create characterization by using STEAL. 13. Use complete sentences. Use capital letters at beginning, periods at end, no run-ons (and and and OR mooshed together), and no fragments. 14. Include an interesting title. |
